Why individual ("1-to-1") tuition?

There can be a variety of reasons for a student to have an interest in individual yoga tuition:
  • TIME
the student may want to fit yoga tuition in an already busy schedule (but is unable to commit to weekly classes at a set time). Individual tuition once every 3 weeks at the most suitable time may allow one to develop a fruitful practice, whilst meeting other commitments.
  • HEALTH ISSUES
the student may have specific health issues (e.g. anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back problems, depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, obesity, etcetera) and is looking for a yoga practice that is uniquely tailored to the situation.
  • ATHLETICS
the student may be looking for ways to enhance athletic performance. A tailored yoga practice can help with injury prevention, speed up recovery time, and mental preparation. Read this pdf flyer on Yoga for Runners.
  • PREGNANCY
the student may have specific requirements which are directly linked to pregnancy, e.g. stabilisation of the pelvic area, improving posture, or raising energy levels.
  • DEPTH
the student may be interested to deepen his / her yoga practice in a way that is not possible even in small groups. This may include, but is not limited to, advanced postures, the use of sound (e.g. vedic chanting), breathing exercises, yoga philosophy, and Ayurveda.
Cost & Getting value from your 1-to-1 tuition

Even though 1-to-1 tuition is a bit more expensive than group class participation, generally the price difference is less than £15/month.

As a guideline, the individual sessions take place fortnightly (with every other session being a 1/2 hour revision session). This not only provides space for the student to spend some time with the home practice, but it also helps keep the monthly costs down.

So, how do you get your money's worth from personal tuition?

Well those who would get most out of this share some common characteristics. These "Ideal Students":
  • Are willing to try new things and take some 'risks' e.g. in terms of personal & lifestyle changes.
  • Have faith in yoga and in me as a teacher. As a teacher I am trying to get the best out of the student; likewise, the student plays a role in getting the most out of me as a teacher.
  • Practice regularly (did you know that five 20-minute practices only take up 1.5% of your waking time during the week? Interestingly, the average Briton is viewing nearly 4 hours of TV per day).
  • Understand the 70/30 rule, i.e. 70% of the value will be realised during the home practice.
Supervision

In 1-to-1 situations complex personal issues may be addressed, and it is of the utmost importance that the right approach is followed at all times.

"Supervision" is a key mechanism for me to help ensure a high level of quality in my 1-to-1 teaching. Concretely, this
means that I'll be liasing with another, highly qualified yoga professional who is offering me advice and guidance.

It is important to have this sounding board. It helps me identify the best possible course of action for each individual student. The end-responsibility naturally remains with me as the teacher.

This is a
common model in medicine and psychology. Unfortunately, in yoga supervision is rare.

Because yoga may involve profound personal transformation, I strongly believe that it is in the best interest of the student that the mechanism of supervision is in place.

Therefore, I have implemented supervision on each individual case. Thus the student can rest assured that his or her personal yoga practice has been carefully reviewed by two committed yoga professionals.

My supervisor is my personal teacher, Mr. Paul Harvey, who brings 36 years of extensive yoga experience (both as a practitioner and teacher) to the table. He is the most senior and respected yoga teacher that I know of.
